XXXIII Campo de Trabalho Internacional - Recuperacao de Moinho de Agua
Desde 2001 que a Palombar organiza campos de trabalho voluntário para reconstruir pombais tradicionais, não só no sentido de reabilitar estes edifícios, mas também de transmitir as técnicas de construção utilizadas tradicionalmente. No entanto, nos últimos anos, temos procurado enfatizar a importância da formação de um público jovem e interessado, de modo a dar continuidade a estes saberes que são cada vez menos postos em prática; é com esse objectivo que temos vindo a diversificar tanto as técnicas abordadas como os alvos das nossas acções, dando especial atenção à recuperação de estruturas já existentes que, pela sua importância cultural e paisagística, se afirmam como património rural.
Exemplo disso são os moinhos de água do Nordeste Transmontano que, com a mecanização da agricultura, têm sido deixados ao abandono. Além de marcarem profundamente a paisagem e de condensarem em si saberes únicos de engenharia e construção tradicional, são engenhos que, uma vez recuperados, têm o potencial de produzir energia limpa e de voltarem, portanto, a ser utilizados.
Assim, a Palombar propõe, em conjunto com a Associação Tarabelo, que o XXXIII Campo de Trabalho Internacional tenha como principal objectivo a recuperação de um antigo moinho de água. Os voluntários terão a oportunidade de participar na reconstrução da estrutura de pedra e do telhado, bem como na instalação do engenho de madeira, recorrendo sempre às técnicas de construção tradicionais. E porque o processo de aprendizagem não termina com as horas de trabalho, os tempos livres serão dedicados ao contacto com a cultura local e à descoberta dos recantos naturais da região. Palombar has been organising volunteer workcamps to restore dovecotes since 2001, not only in order to rehabilitate these buildings, but also to pass down traditionally used construction techniques. However, in the past few years, we have been focusing on the importance of training young, interested students to give continuity to this knowledge, which has been less and less applied over the years. With this goal in mind, we have been diversifying both the tackled techniques and the intervention objects, giving special attention to the restoration of previously existing structures which, due to their landscaping and cultural importance, constitute rural heritage.
Watermills in Northeastern Trás-os-Montes are one such case, as they have been gradually abandoned, at pace with agriculture’s mechanisation. They are a prominent feature of the region’s landscape, and a product of unique engineering knowledge and traditional construction techniques. Moreover, once restored, they have the potential to produce clean energy and to, therefore, be given a new role.
Thus, Palombar and Associação Tarabelo would like to propose the XXXIII International Workcamp’s main goal to be the restoration of an old watermill. Volunteers will have the chance to rebuild both the stone structure and the roof, as well as to install the wooden mill, always recurring to traditional construction techniques. And since the learning process will not be limited to the working hours, free time will be devoted to getting in touch with the local culture and to discovering the region’s natural treasures.
